While some motorcycle accidents can be deadly, many of them are mere nuisances. However, even if you're lucky enough to not be injured in a crash, it's important that you know what to do if an accident does occur. The following information will help you with the proper documentation so you can get reimbursed by your insurance provider.
The first thing to do after an accident occurs is check to see if anyone is injured. If anyone is seriously injured, call 911 immediately. If there are no serious injuries, call the non-emergency police number. When the police arrive, they will write up an accident report, which insurance providers use to help determine fault.
After the authorities are alerted, the best thing to do is move the vehicles off the roadway, if possible. A highway shoulder, parking lot or nearby neighborhood are much safer locations to stop in than a busy street. Once you're safely out of the way of oncoming traffic, it's time to exchange information with the other driver(s). This should include:
- Names, addresses and phone numbers
- Insurance providers and policy numbers
- Make, model and year of vehicles
- Driver's/Motorcycle license numbers and license plate numbers
- Location of the accident (intersection, landmarks, direction of travel etc.)
- Take photos of the damage to the vehicles and the accident scene
Remember to never say that you're sorry. It's essentially the same thing as saying that the accident was your fault, which is up to your insurance provider to determine. If you apologize when the accident was really the other driver's fault, it could possibly affect the amount of money you're able to collect from your insurance provider.
Jot down some notes about any witnesses that stop to help, so your insurance provider can contact them if necessary. Once the information is exchanged, call your independent insurance agent to file a claim. Your insurance provider will contact you and send an adjuster to inspect and document the damage. After that occurs, you can have your motorcycle repaired. Be sure to keep the records from the body shop or mechanic, along with any medical bills associated with the accident. These records help ensure that you get reimbursed for your expenses.
