Even the biggest RV enthusiasts can come to a day when they want to trade in their vehicle for a newer or better model, or settle back into a non-mobile home. When that time comes, you'll want to be able to get a good trade-in price. But in order to do that, you need to take action from the start. Follow these tips as you select and use your RV so that you're more likely to get a better offer when it comes time to sell.
- Buy a quality RV: The manufacturer of the RV is a huge factor in determining the resale value. Buy a vehicle that is built well and made to last, rather than a bargain RV with poorer workmanship.
- Clean it regularly: Besides taking out the trash and avoiding messes inside, washing and waxing the exterior of an RV is essential to keep it looking attractive. Inside, use a conditioner on the vinyl and leather surfaces to keep them looking new. Remove any marks, stains and odors as soon as you notice them.
- Follow the maintenance schedule: Follow the manufacturer's plan of maintenance, recoding dates and what was done for each trip to the mechanic. Making sure the vehicle is running properly is essential in avoiding a costly repair and a subsequent RV insurance claim. Also, keep receipts and warranties in a safe place so you can reference them later if needed.
- Add desirable features: If you're going to add extras to your RV, invest in the ones that enhance the value. Slide outs, awnings and automatic levelers are all good examples.
Buy quality appliances and furniture, and keep all records of improvements, their cost and receipts to help you better value your RV when it's time to sell.
The age and mileage will also have an impact on the selling price, but that may not be something you can control easily. If you're a high mileage traveler, then there's no point in limiting your trips just to protect the value of your RV. Enjoy your life and go where you want! But do be aware that as a RV approaches the six to eight year mark, the value will drop because it takes more to refurbish it, especially if it needs a new transmission or engine. However, if the mileage is low, the age will matter less.
