As the days get longer and warmer, many boat owners are anxious to get their vessel in the water once again. Before you head to the launch, make sure you and your boat are ready to ensure a safe and fun boating season.
- Contact your independent insurance agent. Boat insurance is available to cover you in case of accidents or injuries while out on the water. You may be a safe skipper, but you can't guarantee others out there take the same precautions. There are many boat accidents and thefts each year, so make sure you're covered.
- Follow local laws. Display valid state registrations for your boat and trailer in the appropriate location. If fishing, get a new license for the year, and also permits for any marinas, lakes or other bodies of water you regularly use.
- Review safety. Any new operators should take a safe boating class, and even veteran boaters can benefit from reviewing safety procedures. Make sure you have personal flotation devices for everyone who will be on the boat, along with flares and a way to communicate, such as a cell phone or two-way radio.
- De-winterize your vessel. Charge and connect the battery, top off fluids and check belts. Put muffs on the water intake, connect the garden hose and lower the outdrive. Give it a start and look around for leaks or anything that needs work. You don't want to be out in the middle of the lake and discover there's a problem.
- Check your trailer. Make sure the tires and lights are all in working condition before you head out for your first adventure of the year.
All boat owners get excited with the arrival of a new season, but don't let your anxiousness to get out on the water keep you from taking these essential steps. These will ensure your boating experience will be a fun and safe one.
